The Office of Early Learning and Literacy will provide general updates on statewide requirements for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year, including a data and policy update on Summer Reading Camps. This session will also be recorded and posted to both the OELL website and Leaders Making Readers blog.

Making the Tiers (Not Tears) Make Sense (PK-3) - Inquiry Labs in Summer Reading Camp

This session will share one district's journey through the MTSS process during a pandemic to address the unfinished and interrupted learning of our students by providing teachers with hands-on resources and embedded professional learning through summer inquiry labs. Student and parent engagement tools will be reviewed and shared.

This session will focus on a four step problem-solving process. Practical strategies in using data-based problem-solving to improve Tier 1 Core instruction will be explored.

Understanding the Importance of Meso-Level Data Analysis

MTSS has challenged principals to shift their focus to the 30,000 foot level to analyze systemic patterns and derive Tier 1 solutions. This presentation discusses the meso-level or district-wide tools and data analysis needed as a pre-requisite to engaging school leaders in MTSS.

Implementing a comprehensive framework of education that provides tiered levels of support for the academic needs of all students is a large undertaking for any elementary school. Creating the structure for identification, policies, and implementation of MTSS can be quite a journey for schools. Join this session to learn about the successes and challenges Walker Gamble Elementary has experienced on their journey to tiered support and the impact on student achievement. Our journey will help school teams in their efforts to implement MTSS that uses data to drive support for students.

Flexible, Differentiated Summer Reading Camp Ideas

Flexibility, differentiation, and community connections were huge components of our 2020 Summer Reading Camp. Spartanburg District Two’s session will share how we were able to transition from virtual to face to face instruction while providing flexible options for parents that were both rigorous and differentiated. Some of the highlights that can be immediately implemented from our presentation are our STEM packet activities, online author visits, and ways we continuously connected with our students and families throughout the summer!
